Turtle Tour Explained

Although Turtles lay eggs and are found in many beach of Nicaragua, these particular tours takes you to a natural reserve found on a beach named La Flor. Located approximately 30 km South of San Juan del Sur. Biologists tell us that 5 of 7 marine turtles world wide lay eggs here.  Most “Arribadas” that is the arrivals of turtles happen between August and February every year.  There are basically 2 kinds of turtle tours:

The Momma Tour

This tour happens at night time as the Turtles come on the beach when it is dark to lay their eggs. Groups usually leave San Juan del Sur at 7 pm to head to the beach which is about 45 minute drive away and return after 10 pm as the whole group will wait to actually see turtles and the eggs laying process which takes at least 1 to 2 hours, it is actually fascinating! I know the tours usually come back into town between 11 and 12 pm.

The Baby Turtle Tour

This tour happens early in the morning or right before sunset. It all depends on the biologist on hand at the beach. This tour is when they release the hatchlings (baby turtles). The are usually released either early in the morning or before sunset to help them get into the ocean before major natural predators like birds pick them up.

Recommendations:

  • Dress in dark colors and brings long sleeves and pants for protection against winds and insects
  • For night time tour, use a camera or flashlight with the infra red lights since white lights are not allowed on the reserve
  • Use repellent
  • Take a snacks and drinks with you since there are none available on the reserve for purchase. This will help you to pull you through the evening until you make it make to your hotel or home.
