Comunidad Connect

Comunidad Connect

Supports Nicaraguan communities by matching social, economic and environmental opportunities with local and global resources.  Founded in 2006, as a 501(c)3 non-profit registered in the US, all donations are tax deductible. Comunidad Connect facilitates sustainable community development through three programs: Campo Verde, Parque Deportivo, and Sustainable Tourism.

RE/MAX in San Juan del Sur is a proud supporter of Comunidad Connect and their programs.

Campo Verde

Reuse, reduce and recycle!! Comunidad Connect Campo Verde – Students with Bottles in the Air

Campo Verde (“Green Countryside”) is Comunidad Connect’s largest program, and the vehicle by which Comunidad Connect dedicates resources to environmental conservation.  Since conservation is such a broad idea, Comunidad Connect has developed several projects, each with its own agenda, but all guided by the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle.  What started with the first Municipal Recycling Program in San Juan del Sur, has grown into this portfolio of projects and initiatives that resembles a movement more than a program. Comunidad Connect is currently expanding the scope of Campo Verde to include new communities through strategic public and private partnerships including the Nicaraguan Ministry of Education, banks, hotels, and coffee farms. By implementing best practices and years of field experience, Campo Verde is beginning to create a national footprint.

Current projects include:

  • El Tesón: Local ecological ambassadors lead by example in San Juan del Sur. Daily, they collect garbage and recyclable material on the beach, promote environmental awareness, and sort the collected materials. In October  2011 alone they collected more than 8,000 pounds of waste, including more than 8,000 plastic bottles and more than 7,000 plastic bags.
  • Nica Agua: Water filters provide access to safe drinking water for hundreds of rural residents. In return for the filters, the nearly 1,000 beneficiaries have contributed more than 2,000 hours of service to their communities.
  • Reusable Bag Campaign: Locally sewn reusable bags have help dozens of families minimize the number of plastic bags that end up in rivers and highways. For each reusable bag, approximately 3 plastic bags are eliminated on a daily basis.
  • El Carrizal: In partnership with Casa Llanta, CC supports the residents of El Carrizal through innovative cooperative enterprise projects and English classes.

Parque Deportivo

Comunidad Connect Strives to provide a positive outlet for the community and has been very successful thanks to the help of donors and volunteers alike!

The Parque Deportivo (“Sports Park”) is Comunidad Connect’s first and most visible community asset. League games in soccer and basketball for men, women, and children provide a safe and healthy environment for the residents of San Juan del Sur. International and national events in volleyball and boxing draw hundreds of people to their favorite beach-side bleachers. The Parque Deportivo provides a place especially for youth to congregate and socialize, with all of the activities focused on sports. Starting in 2006, we installed brand new overhead lighting, playing surface, basketball and soccer goals, public bathrooms, office, and seating for up to 800 people.  In 2007 we opened with the town’s first ever futsal (“arena soccer”) league.  Over 600 town residents were in attendance as 17 teams began a futsal tradition that now has expanded to three different age categories for men and women, boys and girls.  Currently over 1200 young people participate in the leagues organized by Comunidad Connect, which create over 40 semi-permanent local jobs annually. As a venue for regional, national, and international events, the Parque Deportivo has a positive effect on the local economy in addition to youth development, and public safety.

Sustainable Tourism

Comunidad Connect – Emory Group Shot at Coffee farm

Tourism has such a large impact on the economy, the environment, and the culture of the host community. Our Sustainable Tourism program maximizes the benefits and minimizes the detriments of tourism on these three areas.

Sustainable Tourism is a unique way for travelers, students, families, and groups to experience Nicaragua. The cultural interaction and insight that comes with a service project and a home stay with a Nicaraguan family cannot be replicated with traditional tourism. Many of our volunteers have expressed that their trips were eye-opening and even life-changing.
We develop projects based on the volunteer’s experience and interests while meeting important community needs. Volunteers can take Spanish classes, participate in a range of organized activities and excursions, or independently explore Nicaragua in their free time. Each project and experience is unique, and we welcome volunteers during the entire calendar year.
